Meaning
English Explanation
In this stanza, Vallalar presents four profound aspects of the one Divine Light: Suyam, Param, Arul and Sivam. They are not four different gods or four separate lights, but different ways in which the one Arutperunjothi is understood and experienced.
“Suyam” means self-existent. Suyam Jothi is therefore the Light that shines by its own nature, depending on no other source and produced by no external cause. It is beginningless and self-luminous.
“Param” means the Supreme or transcendent Reality. The same self-existent Light is not confined to any single place; it transcends all limits while pervading the cosmos, the individual being, life, awareness and knowledge.
“Arul” means Divine Grace. The Supreme does not remain merely transcendent; it acts compassionately toward living beings. The power that sustains life, awakens understanding, develops compassion and leads the soul toward higher realization is experienced as Arul Jothi.
“Sivam” signifies the pure and complete Divine state. When the obstructions that veil spiritual awareness are removed and Grace is fully realized within, the same Jothi is experienced as the fullness of Sivam. Thus Suyam, Param, Arul and Sivam are dimensions of one Supreme Light of Grace.

English Explanation
In this stanza, Vallalar describes the one Divine Light as appearing through many dimensions, powers and spiritual experiences. The different names of Jothi do not necessarily indicate separate divine beings. The repeated conclusion “Eka Jothi” makes the central teaching clear: behind all diversity there is only one Divine Light.
Vama Jothi may be understood as the Divine Light expressed through beauty, grace or divine power.
Soma Jothi suggests the cooling, peaceful and soothing quality symbolized by moonlight.
Vaana Jothi is the Light pervading the heavens and vast cosmic space.
Gnana Jothi is the Light of true knowledge that removes inner ignorance and reveals spiritual truth.
Maaga Jothi may be understood as exalted or magnificent Divine Light.
Yoga Jothi is the Light that draws individual consciousness toward union with the Divine.
Vaatha Jothi can be understood in relation to movement, vital activity or the principle of air.
Naatha Jothi is the Divine Light underlying subtle primordial sound or sacred vibration.
Ema Jothi may be understood as the protecting, sustaining and benevolent aspect of Divine Light.
Viyoma Jothi is the Light pervading boundless space.
Eru Jothi is the Light that raises the soul from ignorance toward knowledge, from selfishness toward compassion and from confusion toward clarity.
Veeru Jothi is the majestic and powerful Divine Light.
The repeated expression “Eka Jothi” is the key to the stanza. Vallalar brings all these diverse manifestations back to unity: many appearances, many functions and many experiences, but one underlying Reality. That one Reality is the Supreme Light of Grace, Arutperunjothi.
English Explanation
In this stanza, Vallalar addresses the same Divine Reality praised as Jothi in the earlier stanzas as his Lord, the revealer of Wisdom and the One whose eternal Divine Dance expresses continuous divine activity.
“Aadhi” identifies the Divine as the primal Source and foundation of all existence. “Neethi” points to Divine Order, truth and harmony. “Vedhane” addresses the Lord as the ultimate Reality and source of true spiritual knowledge toward which sacred wisdom points.
“Aadal Needu Paadhane” evokes the Lord whose sacred feet are eternally engaged in the Divine Dance. This dance should not be understood merely as physical movement. It symbolizes the ceaseless Divine activity through which creation is sustained, transformed, illumined and graced.
“Vaadhi Gnana Bodhane” presents the Divine as the teacher who reveals true knowledge to those who enquire and seek Truth. Human reasoning and study can guide the seeker, but complete spiritual realization requires Grace to illuminate consciousness from within.
“Vaazhga Vaazhga Naadhane” is an ecstatic expression of praise. It is not a literal wish that the eternal Lord should live longer; it expresses the prayer that His Grace, Light, Compassion and Divine Rule may shine and flourish everywhere.
Overall English Summary
“Jothi Jothi” presents one Divine Reality from three complementary perspectives. The first stanza describes the nature of the Divine Light: it is self-existent, Supreme, active as Grace, and realized in the pure fullness of Sivam. The second stanza shows the same Light appearing through many dimensions, powers, natural symbols and spiritual experiences. Yet Vallalar repeatedly brings all these manifestations back to “Eka Jothi” — One Light. The third stanza reveals the relationship between this One Light and the soul. The Divine is the primal Source, the foundation of true order, the revealer of Wisdom, the eternal Divine Dancer and the intimate Lord who guides the seeker from within. The central message of the song is therefore that the many forms, powers and experiences of Divine Light do not point to separate ultimate realities. They are manifestations of one self-luminous Supreme Light of Grace — Arutperunjothi.
