Elaborate English Meaning
In the divine Hall that shines like firmly wrought, perfectly
refined gold, Vallalar beholds visions beyond ordinary sight. They are wonders
that exceed conceptual knowledge and language. His intimate address, “Amma,”
conveys astonishment shared with the tenderness and immediacy of speaking to a
mother or close companion.
This refrain establishes the governing theme of the whole
hymn. The mountain, road, platform, mansion, jewels, gateways, powers and final
sanctuary that follow are progressive unfoldings of this single vision of
Grace.
பாடல் 2
சோதி மலை ஒன்று தோன்றிற்று;
அதில் ஒரு வீதி உண்டாயிற்றடி — அம்மா,
வீதி உண்டாயிற்றடி. ஆணி.
விரிவான தமிழ்ப் பொருள்
முதலில் வள்ளலாரின் அகக்காட்சியில் ஒளியால் ஆன ஒரு மலை தோன்றுகிறது.
மலை உயர்ந்த ஆன்மிக நிலை, நிலைத்த பெருமை மற்றும் மேலெழும் பயணத்தைச் சுட்டுகிறது;
Elaborate English Meaning
A mountain composed of Light first appears in Vallalar’s
inward vision. The mountain signifies spiritual height, stability and ascent;
it is not a material peak but an elevation made entirely of consciousness and
Grace-Light.
Within that mountain a road becomes visible. This is crucial:
Grace itself opens a traversable way toward a Reality that otherwise seems
inaccessible. The seeker is not abandoned in a pathless expanse; divine radiance
reveals the route of inner progress.
Elaborate English Meaning
Vallalar proceeds along the road revealed by Grace. He does
not stop at merely seeing the path; he walks it. Spiritual truth thus becomes
lived experience, for Sanmarga is not only a doctrine but a journey undertaken.
At the road’s centre stands a raised platform. It represents
an elevated level of awareness reached during the journey—a transitional
station that lifts the seeker above ordinary perception and prepares him for
the next disclosure.
Elaborate English Meaning
Vallalar climbs onto the platform. The verb “I ascended”
suggests conscious participation with Grace: each rise in awareness requires
receptivity and movement, and each attained height reveals a deeper interior
level.
The hall upon the platform may be understood as an inner
chamber where scattered consciousness becomes gathered. It is a protected field
of knowledge in which divine experience unfolds—another step from the outer
world toward the intimate Hall within.
Elaborate English Meaning
As Vallalar seeks and examines the hall, a seven-storeyed
mansion appears above it. “Seeking” here is more than looking; it is the
earnest desire to enter and know the truth.
The seven levels symbolize a progressive purification,
awakening and ascent of consciousness. Although seven often signifies a
complete hierarchy in spiritual traditions, the central point is not physical
architecture but a succession of inward states opened by Grace.
Elaborate English Meaning
Vallalar wonders how he can describe the marvels contained
within all seven levels. As spiritual experience intensifies, ordinary
vocabulary and conceptual divisions can no longer carry its fullness.
“How shall I tell it?” is not an empty silence caused by lack
of knowledge, but a saturated silence born from excess of experience. The
jewels and colours in the following stanzas are suggestive symbols, not
substitutes for the reality itself.
Elaborate English Meaning
On one level appear radiant pearl, white jewel and noble blue
brilliance. White evokes purity and freedom from stain, while blue suggests
depth, vastness and tranquillity.
This is not an inventory of material wealth. Distinct
qualities of purified consciousness are experienced as coloured jewels, each
gem becoming a particular refraction of the one Divine Light.
Elaborate English Meaning
At another level appear deep dark-blue radiance and red
coral. The dark blue may suggest unknowable depth and concealed power; the red
coral evokes living energy, the warmth of love and active divine force.
Depth resembling darkness and vivid crimson brilliance are
united in one vision of Grace. Divine experience cannot be reduced to a single
tone: stillness and power, mystery and loving warmth coexist in the same
Reality.
பாடல் 9
மற்றோர் நிலையில் மரகதப் பச்சை,
செம்
மாணிக்கம் ஆயிற்றடி — அம்மா,
மாணிக்கம் ஆயிற்றடி. ஆணி.
விரிவான தமிழ்ப் பொருள்
அடுத்த நிலையில் மரகதத்தின் பச்சை ஒளியும் செம்மாணிக்கத்தின் சிவப்பொளியும்
விளங்குகின்றன. பச்சை வளர்ச்சி, புதுப்பிப்பு, உயிர்ப்பெருக்கு மற்றும் கருணையின் குளிர்ச்சியை;
Elaborate English Meaning
The next level shines with emerald green and the red of ruby.
Green suggests growth, renewal, flourishing life and the cooling quality of
compassion; ruby-red conveys intense love and imperishable vitality.
Grace both cools and nurtures the soul, and sets the heart
ablaze with love. These are not contradictions but two experiential aspects of
the same compassion that preserves and transforms life.
பாடல் 10
பின்னோர் நிலையில் பெருமுத்து,
வச்சிரப்
பேர்மணி ஆயிற்றடி — அம்மா,
பேர்மணி ஆயிற்றடி. ஆணி.
விரிவான தமிழ்ப் பொருள்
பின்னர் காணப்பட்ட நிலையில் பெரிய முத்தும் வச்சிரம் எனப்படும் வைரப்
பேர்மணியும் ஒளிர்கின்றன. முத்து உள்ளார்ந்த முதிர்ச்சியையும் களங்கமற்ற மென்மையையும்;
வைரம் உடைக்க முடியாத உறுதி, தெளிவு மற்றும் கூர்மையான ஞானத்தையும் குறிக்கிறது.
கருணையால் பழுத்த மென்மையும் அசைக்க முடியாத மெய்யறிவும் ஆன்மாவில்
ஒன்றாக வேண்டும் என்பதே இக்காட்சியின் உள்ளார்ந்த செய்தி. உண்மையான ஆன்மவலிமை கடினமனமல்ல;
முத்தின் மென்மையையும் வைரத்தின் உறுதியையும் இணைக்கும் நிலை.
Elaborate English Meaning
At a subsequent level appear a great pearl and the
magnificent diamond-jewel called vajra. The pearl suggests inward maturity and
stainless gentleness; the diamond conveys indestructible firmness, clarity and
penetrating wisdom. The vision joins compassion’s ripened tenderness with
unshakable knowledge of Truth. Authentic spiritual strength is not hardness of
heart; it combines the softness of pearl with the resilience and lucidity of
diamond.
செயல் மற்றும் தூய்மை ஒன்றுபடுகின்றன. கருணைச் செயல் தூய நோக்குடன் அமைய வேண்டும்;
தூய்மை உயிர்களுக்குப் பயன் தரும் செயலில் மலர வேண்டும்.
Elaborate English Meaning
Another level displays abundant clusters of coral together
with white jewels. The word “cluster,” rather than a solitary gem, suggests
divine powers multiplying while remaining harmoniously gathered.
Coral’s vital glow joins the purity of white stone, uniting
action with stainless intention. Compassionate work must arise from purity,
while purity must flower into action that benefits living beings.
Elaborate English Meaning
On another describable level, many kinds of gems fit together
and become a golden jewel-like radiance. Diverse colours and qualities form a
harmonious beauty without merely erasing their distinctiveness.
The image recalls Vallalar’s vision of reconciliation.
Different states, powers and experiences cease to conflict when held in Grace;
their concord reveals an imperishable worth symbolized by gold.
Elaborate English Meaning
At a still higher level, all the jewels previously described
become clear crystal. Distinctions of colour subside into a transparency that
receives and transmits light without obstruction.
Crystal does not insist upon a colour of its own but
faithfully reflects the light present to it. Likewise, when ego’s private
colouring falls away, the soul becomes a stainless medium for the radiance of
Grace.
பாடல் 14
ஏழ்நிலை மேலே இருந்தது ஓர் தம்பம்;
Elaborate English Meaning
Above the seven levels stands a beautifully proportioned
golden pillar. A pillar supports the structure and joins what is below to what
is above; it may therefore symbolize the central axis of Grace integrating
every state.
The “harmoniously formed” pillar conveys not brute strength
alone, but order, balance and concord. The soul’s many levels are upheld by one
central Grace and directed toward further ascent.
Elaborate English Meaning
As Vallalar sees and begins to ascend the golden pillar,
ever-new wonders appear. Even after passing through the seven levels, the
spiritual journey is not exhausted; each apparent completion opens into a
deeper Grace.
Again he asks how such novelty can be expressed. Grace never
becomes stale through familiarity. Even at exalted heights it continually
discloses an inexhaustible newness that renews wonder.
Elaborate English Meaning
Vallalar says that describing what confronted him during the
ascent lies beyond his capacity. If even the one who underwent the experience
cannot fully translate it into speech, ordinary measurement cannot contain its
scope.
This humility is not ignorance. It is the insight of a knower
who recognizes that Grace is greater than the individual. He refuses to present
the vision as a personal achievement and receives it as an immeasurable divine
disclosure.
Elaborate English Meaning
At many points along the ascent, powers appear in their
thousands. These “Saktis” may be understood as manifold operations of the
Divine, forms of Grace, or celestial presences embodying those powers.
Though countless, they are expressions of one Reality.
Spiritual powers encountered during ascent are not the final goal; they are
movements of Grace along the way. The seeker must not become arrested by their
splendour but continue toward the originating Presence.
Elaborate English Meaning
Even when thousands of powers approach, Vallalar does not
fall into bewilderment. Exalted visions, abilities and delights can become
distractions if they generate the egoistic claim, “I possess these.”
The mastery and protection bestowed by Grace keep him steady.
Delusion is overcome not by self-assertion but by abiding in Grace. The truest
spiritual power preserves clarity, humility and direction.
Elaborate English Meaning
By the capacity bestowed through Grace, Vallalar ascends the
great pillar and beholds a crown composed of jewels. Personal effort alone does
not raise him; the mastery received from Grace is the true power of ascent.
The jeweled crown signifies a luminous culmination in which
many purified qualities are gathered. It is not an external emblem of
domination, but the radiant fulfilment appearing at the summit of consciousness
transformed by Grace.
பாடல் 20
மணிமுடி மேல் ஓர் கொடுமுடி நின்றது;
Elaborate English Meaning
Above the jeweled crown stands a still higher pointed summit.
At the very moment one might think the peak has been reached, another elevation
beyond it is disclosed.
The image communicates the inexhaustibility of the Divine.
Spiritual attainment grants real fulfilment, yet no finite consciousness can
claim to have measured the whole depth of Grace. Every summit becomes a new
opening.
Elaborate English Meaning
Upon the high summit appears a temple of gold praised as
“one-thousand-and-eight-fold refined.” The number 1008 traditionally suggests
sacred completeness and abundant perfection, while refined gold signifies
freedom from alloy or impurity.
The temple is not merely an exterior structure. It is
consciousness completely purified into a dwelling of the Divine. After the
levels and trials of ascent, the soul itself opens as the golden sanctuary.
Elaborate English Meaning
Having seen the golden temple, Vallalar proceeds toward its
tower-gateway without shrinking or hesitation. Grace has removed the fear and
sense of unworthiness that may arise before an exalted divine state.
His fearlessness is not egoistic boldness but confidence born
from divine permission. When Grace invites, the seeker enters with humility and
trust. Fear disappears without diminishing reverence.
Elaborate English Meaning
Inside the tower-gateway are countless crores of Saktis and
Sattars. The Saktis represent divine energies, while the Sattars may be
understood as perfected beings or states established in true knowledge.
The approach to the sanctuary is not an inert emptiness but a
vast assembly of Grace’s innumerable operations and fulfilled consciousnesses.
Yet Vallalar does not stop even before this splendour; he continues toward the
innermost Presence.
Elaborate English Meaning
The divine beings there appear in five colours, including
white and red. These five colours may recall the five elements, the five divine
functions, or fundamental modes of sacred energy; the verse does not confine
them to a single rigid correspondence.
Colour-difference here does not imply division. One Light
manifests in different hues according to its qualities and operations. The
vision invites recognition of Grace’s unity within diversity.
Elaborate English Meaning
Although those assembled wonder, “Who is this person who has
come here?” Vallalar does not stop to explain or establish an identity; he
proceeds beyond them. Concern with how others classify the seeker can itself
become a subtle obstruction.
Because his direction is established by Grace, he is not
detained by recognition, praise or questioning. Moving beyond the demand to
define “who I am,” he gives priority to direct encounter over egoic identity.
Elaborate English Meaning
Beyond the great assembly, Vallalar finds five beings
stationed at another sacred gateway. Symbolically, they may signify the
agencies of the five divine functions, five fundamental principles, or five
guardians appropriate to this threshold.
The central point is not to force an exact identification,
but to recognize a further integration and purification before entry into the
inner Presence. A gateway marks both a boundary and the gracious permission to
cross it.
Elaborate English Meaning
The five remain and guide Vallalar until he reaches a higher
jeweled gateway. Guidance remains essential even in exalted spiritual regions;
Grace meets the seeker as Guru, guardian or divine prompting at successive
stages.
The jeweled gate is an entrance made of purified radiance.
The many gem-like qualities encountered earlier are now integrated into a
threshold inviting the seeker into a still more intimate relationship with the
Divine.
Elaborate English Meaning
At the jeweled gateway stand two figures, one female and one
male. They may symbolize Sakti and Siva, Grace and Knowledge, dynamic energy
and the still ground—complementary divine principles that complete one another.
Male and female here transcend bodily distinction and point
to cosmic fundamentals. Before final unity is entered, the vision reveals that
power and source, though appearing as two, form an inseparable pair.
Elaborate English Meaning
Guided by the two figures, Vallalar beholds the “sacred
gateway of intimate nearness.” The journey that began among outwardly depicted
levels has now reached the immediate interior proximity of the Divine.
He sees this entrance with love. Knowledge may guide the way,
but love is the key to the final sanctuary. Neither fear, curiosity nor desire
for power opens the last threshold; pure affection brings life into nearness
with God.
Elaborate English Meaning
At the gateway of intimate nearness Vallalar beholds the
Divine Mother, Anandavalli. The words “my Mother” show that this is not a
distant metaphysical principle, but a personal relationship of protection,
nurture and embrace.
Anandavalli is not merely a power that gives bliss; she is
maternal Grace whose very form is bliss. Her presence before Nataraja’s
sanctuary reveals that the way to the Supreme passes through compassion.
Elaborate English Meaning
Vallalar does not stop at seeing the Divine Mother; he
receives and appropriates her Grace. Vision becomes relationship and
participation. “I received” indicates a direct experience in which the heart
opens and consents to Grace.
He then drinks the nectar, symbolizing deathless knowledge,
inexhaustible love and bliss that fulfils life. Authentic divine vision is not
merely a spectacle for the eyes; it is nourishment that transforms the being
from within.
பாடல் 32
தாங்கும் அவள் அருளாலே நடராஜர்
சந்நிதி கண்டேனடி — அம்மா,
சந்நிதி கண்டேனடி. ஆணி.
விரிவான தமிழ்ப் பொருள்
தன்னைத் தாங்கிய தாயருளாலேயே வள்ளலார் நடராஜரின் சந்நிதியை காண்கிறார்.
இறுதியான காட்சி தனிப்பட்ட அறிவாற்றல் அல்லது தவச்சாதனையின் வெற்றி எனக் கூறப்படவில்லை;
Elaborate English Meaning
Only through the Mother’s sustaining Grace does Vallalar
behold the sanctuary of Nataraja. The final vision is not presented as the
triumph of personal intellect or austerity; it is received as the gift of Grace
that supports and raises him.
Nataraja’s sanctuary is the innermost centre where the Divine
Dance becomes immediate presence. Anandavalli’s compassion and Nataraja’s dance
of wisdom are inseparable: maternal Grace leads the seeker into the living
presence of Siva.
Elaborate English Meaning
Vallalar declares that only the Lord fully knows the blessing
he received after entering Nataraja’s sanctuary. The inadequacy of language,
present throughout the journey, reaches its climax: human speech cannot
encompass the final communion.
This silence does not conceal the experience; it protects its
sacred immeasurability. Where the distinctions among seer, seen and seeing
begin to dissolve, the personal calculation “What did I obtain?” no longer
applies. The Lord alone knows the truth of that attainment.
Elaborate English Meaning
The hymn closes by returning to its opening refrain. When the
entire journey—from the Mountain of Light to Nataraja’s sanctuary—is gathered
into one utterance, only awed recognition remains: these are wondrous visions. The
repetition completes a circle. The wonder announced at the beginning has now
been deepened by the stages of experience. After traversing every level,
knowledge returns to devotional simplicity and sings only the marvel of Grace.
